As the world inches closer to cannabis legalization, one might think the fight is nearly over. Think again. The War on Weed is alive and kicking, with governments and corporations battling to control the burgeoning market. In the land of the free, cannabis users still face oppression, greed, and hypocrisy.

The Hypocrisy of Legalization

Cannabis legalization is a cash cow, and everyone wants a piece. But let’s not forget the countless lives ruined by draconian drug laws. People of color, particularly Black and Latino communities, have borne the brunt of these policies. Now, as white-owned corporations rake in the profits, those who were criminalized for cannabis are still fighting for justice.

Fact Check: According to the ACLU, Black people are 3.64 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white people, despite similar usage rates. Meanwhile, the legal cannabis market in the U.S. is projected to reach $30 billion by 2025.

Big Pharma’s New Target

Big Pharma is licking its lips, ready to sink its claws into the cannabis industry. They’ve already started lobbying to corner the market, aiming to turn a plant that’s been used medicinally for thousands of years into just another overpriced prescription.

Fact Check: In 2023 alone, pharmaceutical companies spent over $10 million lobbying for stricter regulations on cannabis to control its medicinal use. This is the same industry responsible for the opioid crisis, now masquerading as a savior in the cannabis market.

The corporate world is no better. Mega corporations are swooping in, eager to monopolize the industry. Small businesses and independent growers are being pushed out, unable to compete with the vast resources of corporate giants.

Fact Check: Major alcohol and tobacco companies, such as Constellation Brands and Altria, have invested billions in cannabis companies, signaling a corporate takeover of the industry.

The Fight for Home Grow

In many states where cannabis is legal, growing your own plants remains illegal. This is a direct attack on personal freedom and a blatant attempt to ensure all cannabis profits go to the big players.

Fact Check: As of 2024, home growing is still prohibited in states like New Jersey and Illinois, despite the legalization of recreational cannabis.

The Louisiana Legislation Debacle

Recent legislative actions in Louisiana have added to the ongoing cannabis chaos. Governor Jeff Landry, a former cop and Trump loyalist, has been playing both sides of the fence. On one hand, he signed legislation privatizing the cultivation of medical cannabis, which was previously controlled by two public universities. On the other hand, he vetoed House Bill 391, which aimed to expand cannabis decriminalization efforts.

Fact Check: Governor Jeff Landry signed SB 228, transferring medical cannabis cultivation to private companies, but vetoed HB 391, maintaining stricter control over cannabis-related activities. Additionally, Louisiana’s legislature passed a bill decriminalizing marijuana paraphernalia, sending it to Landry for approval.
