Trulieve’s Multimillion-Dollar Drive for Recreational Cannabis in Florida

Trulieve, Florida’s largest provider of medical marijuana, is spearheading a robust campaign to legalize recreational cannabis in the Sunshine State by 2024. Through the “Smart & Safe Florida” political action committee, the company has poured nearly $40 million into efforts to get the initiative, dubbed “Adult Personal Use of Marijuana,” onto the ballot.

This initiative aims to transform Florida’s cannabis landscape by allowing adults 21 and older to possess, purchase, and use marijuana for personal consumption without medical oversight. This would extend the market beyond the current medical use, offering a broader range of opportunities for legal cannabis consumption. The proposal, however, maintains the prohibition on personal cultivation, focusing sales through existing medical marijuana treatment centers and other state-licensed entities​​.

Trulieve’s financial contributions to the campaign have been a powerhouse move, setting a record for single-donor backing in the state’s cannabis reform history.
