Pot Culture Magazine is an independent cannabis publication based in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the heart of the French Quarter, hidden among Bourbon Street bars and buildings. Founded on June 26, 2013, by writer and publisher Matthew Roberts, the magazine delivers cannabis culture, news, and commentary with a sharp, countercultural edge. Known for its tagline “For the Culture. By the Culture.”, Pot Culture Magazine has built a reputation for hard-edged, in-your-face writing and a relentless publishing schedule.

History

Origins (2013)

Pot Culture Magazine’s first logo from Dec 5, 2023

Pot Culture Magazine began as a grassroots blog on Google Blogspot. The publication was founded on June 26, 2013, by Matthew Roberts, a writer and creator with a background in independent journalism and internet radio. Before Pot Culture Magazine, Roberts hosted Strange Air Radio, a two-hour Friday night broadcast on the now-defunct platform Stickam.com. The show featured original comedy sketches, satirical commercial parodies, and interviews with cultural figures such as Henry Hill (the real-life inspiration for Ray Liotta’s character in Goodfellas), comedians Jim Florentine, and Rev. Bob Levy.

After Strange Air Radio ended, Roberts shifted his focus back to writing, contributing columns for publications including The New Orleans Examiner, where he covered top news and comedy. During this time, he interviewed notable figures such as Tommy Chong of Cheech and Chong, Mickey Munday of Cocaine Cowboys, comedian Doug Benson, Aziz Ansari, Jeff Cesario, and Cathy Ladman.

Pot Culture Magazine launched with a small team of contributors but became dormant within weeks when momentum faded.

Revival and Growth (2023–2025)

In December 2023, Roberts rediscovered the original Blogspot account, which still had 245 followers after a decade of inactivity. Inspired, he relaunched Pot Culture Magazine with a new WordPress site and began publishing daily content. The revived publication quickly gained traction for its sharp editorial voice and commitment to independence.

From December 5, 2023, to July 5, 2025, Pot Culture Magazine published 702 articles on its website alone, averaging daily releases without interruption. Simultaneously, Roberts revamped the original Blogspot, which became home to the magazine’s blog, publishing three posts weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Since the relaunch of Blogspot, 107 posts have been published, with an all-time view count of 70,919.

All of this has been achieved with no budget and no additional staff. Roberts remains the sole editor, writer, photographer, and publisher, producing every headline, image, and post.

Recognition

In 2024, Pot Culture Magazine secured an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), formalizing its status as a registered periodical. It has developed a strong presence on social platforms like Bluesky, using segments like to engage readers with bite-sized cannabis culture trivia.

In July 2025, Pot Culture Magazine began receiving external recognition for its reporting and commentary:

  • Stuff You Should Know, one of the most downloaded podcasts worldwide, quoted Pot Culture’s reporting in an episode on cannabis culture. The podcast referenced the magazine’s line describing websites “reduced to an error message that is reminiscent of finding your favorite uncle dead on the floor.” (Listen to SYSK here)
  • Pot Culture published the first media profile of Steven Hager, former High Times Editor-in-Chief, in thirty-six years. This profile is now cited on Hager’s Wikipedia page and described as a follow-up to his original Bedtime for Bongo profile in Details magazine. Hager also shared his latest work on his blog, The Tin Whistle.
  • Peter Reynolds, a UK cannabis reform advocate and leader of CLEAR UK, shared Pot Culture’s article Funded Fear: The System That Keeps Cannabis Scary on X under the tag. He later reposted it on CLEAR’s official Facebook page, sparking discussions on drug policy propaganda.

While still relatively unknown in mainstream cannabis media, Pot Culture Magazine has earned respect within niche communities for its uncompromising voice and relentless publishing schedule.
