Turns out, some jobs practically come with a side of green. The brainiacs at the CDC decided to dig through five years of data to find out just who’s clocking out and lighting up—and the results are chef’s kiss. If you’re in food service or hospitality, odds are good that you’re sparking up after a long shift of dealing with picky eaters, screaming kids, and high-maintenance diners. Yep, food and hospitality workers top the list, with a solid 20.7% openly admitting they’ve recently toked. Not a shocker—if you’ve ever served up cocktails to a crowd of Karens, you know why that blunt’s waiting for you.
Right on their heels are the artists, musicians, and media crowd, hitting 17.5% on the cannabis consumption scale. Creative burnout is real, and if your paycheck depends on pumping out new ideas, the occasional joint is almost mandatory. Then there’s construction at 15.9%. These folks spend their days laying concrete and busting ass on sites, so yeah, they’re probably not reaching for a protein shake after work.
And who’s on the other side of the spectrum, barely touching the stuff? Public administrators at a pitiful 3.7%, utility workers at 3.4%, and the management types at a meager 5.4%. You can almost hear them saying, “We don’t do cannabis.” Yeah, we get it. You’ve got your hands too full with PowerPoints and quarterly projections.
When they break it down by actual job, it’s a trip. Food prep and serving workers? A fat 21.9% are rolling up in their off-hours. Close behind are the creatives—arts, entertainment, and media types, all clocking in at 17%. And the construction crew, steady at 15.5%, is right there with them. And for the down-to-business crowd in healthcare, education, and protective services? Nah, they’re sitting this one out. When you’re cutting people open, teaching kids their ABCs, or keeping the peace, it’s tough to keep a joint in the rotation.
The CDC went all out, collecting data from over 128,000 workers in 15 states, and found about 10.7% of employed adults over 18 reported recent cannabis use. These stats line up with the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which puts the number around 13% for anyone 12 and up. Meaning? Your boss, your server, hell, maybe even your accountant are all likely lighting up just like you. We’ve got ourselves a mainstream movement.
Takeaway? Cannabis isn’t just weekend fun anymore—it’s baked into the 9-to-5 grind, fueling the people making your meals, building your city, and creating your entertainment. State policymakers better wise up, because if this data says anything, it’s that weed is part of work culture now. And for everyone else? Time to ditch the tired stereotypes and realize: that weed’s no longer just for the basement crowd. It’s right there, on the clock, every day.
