Maine’s cannabis industry just faced its first major recall, and it’s an emergency everyone’s talking about. For the first time since the state’s recreational market launched in 2020, tainted marijuana products are being pulled from shelves due to mold and yeast contamination. The Maine Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP) initiated the recall after products from Cannabis Cured failed to test for contamination levels beyond acceptable limits.

Moldy Weed—The Serious Risks
This isn’t just about some stale flower. Moldy weed poses real health risks, especially for people with respiratory issues or weakened immune systems. Symptoms from smoking mold-contaminated weed can include sinus infections, dizziness, headaches, and fatigue. The contamination threshold set by OCP follows the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia guidelines, meaning any contamination over 10,000 colony-forming units per gram is a no-go.

Are Refunds Offered?
Refunds aren’t mandatory across all dispensaries, but Sweet Relief is offering refunds if customers return the products with the original packaging and batch info. Cannabis Cured hasn’t publicly committed to offering refunds at this time, leaving some customers in a frustrating position.
What’s Next?
This recall is Maine’s first wake-up call about the vulnerabilities in cannabis product safety, and it could prompt the industry to tighten up testing standards. For now, if you’ve bought any of these products, dispose of them or return them to the store.
