The Tokers Guide to Summer Travel: Where to Blaze and Where to Steer Clear

Summer’s here, and if you’re a cannabis enthusiast, the world is your oyster—sort of. With the patchwork quilt of weed laws spread across the U.S. and the globe, navigating where you can light up without landing in hot water is crucial. Buckle up, because this guide will take you through the dos and don’ts of traveling with your stash.

Blaze-Friendly States: The Highs and Lows

Half of the U.S. states have fully legalized cannabis, turning them into stoner paradises. Washington and Colorado were the trailblazers, opening their green doors in 2012. Today, you can find dispensaries on almost every corner in cities like Denver and Seattle. Want to mix in some tourism? Check out the cannabis festivals in San Francisco, Oakland, and D.C. Airbnb and Bud and Breakfast are your go-to for weed-friendly accommodations. But don’t get too comfortable—interstate travel with weed is still a no-go thanks to federal laws.

Some states are new to the game and still ironing out the kinks. Delaware legalized adult-use cannabis in 2023, but don’t expect dispensaries to pop up until 2026 unless new laws speed things along. For now, Delaware is a dry spell for recreational users.

Medical-Only Zones: Stay Informed or Stay Home

Thirteen states only allow medical cannabis, so if you’re packing a bowl in Florida without a medical card, you’re asking for trouble. Major tourist cities might be lax, issuing fines instead of jail time, but it’s a gamble.

Other states like Texas, Georgia, and Kentucky are even stricter, permitting only CBD oils with minimal THC. Don’t expect to get high—these are strictly for health benefits.

Total Buzzkill States: Avoid at All Costs

Six states, including Idaho and Wyoming, are still living in the dark ages. In Idaho, possession of more than three ounces can get you five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Wyoming isn’t far behind with similar draconian penalties. The message is clear: if you’re caught with weed, you’re screwed.

International Adventures: Tread Carefully

Dreaming of sparking up on a global adventure? The reality is most countries aren’t as weed-friendly as you’d hope. Canada is an exception, where you can legally buy and consume cannabis. Just don’t try bringing any back over the border.

Mexico’s laws are murky. While decriminalized for locals, tourists can face fines and other penalties. Europe offers pockets of freedom, like the coffee shops of Amsterdam and cannabis clubs in Barcelona. But in places like Georgia and South Africa, you can use but not buy, making it tricky for tourists.

The Bottom Line

Know before you go. Research local laws on platforms like the Marijuana Policy Project and World Population Review. Ignorance isn’t bliss when it comes to cannabis and travel. Enjoy your summer, but keep it legal.
